Genesis free essay sample

With Genesis and the Popol Vuh, there are many similarities and some differences. Genesis is the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Popol Vuh is a story created from the Mayans. Both have used unique ways to explain the reasoning for the world to be created. Bothe stories have a unique plot with an epic twist that explains the future of human life itself in the future for all humans that are to be born. In the book of Genesis, it says that the Lord created the world in seven days and in the last day he took a rest and looked at his work. When he saw that his work was good, he decided to create a man and a woman to continue the world and have it be populated with him humans. After God tells the man and the woman about the garden and where they’re allowed to go and what they are allowed to touch. The man and woman agree to God’s rules and regulations, until a serpent comes along and persuades the woman to take from the forbidden tree first. The woman is hesitant but then eventually agrees with the snake and takes a bite. She also gets the man to take a bite. God sees all of this and ascends from heaven and reprimands the couple and punishes them. Before the man and woman see God, they realize they are naked and being to make clothes out of leaves and hide themselves from God. God asks why they did something he told them not to do. The man blamed the woman and the woman blames the serpent. All in all, since all three creatures God created were in the wrong, God punished the man so that he’ll have to earn everything he wants by working hard for the rest of his life. God punished the woman by giving her excruciating pains during child birth. Lastly, the serpent was punished by being stripped of his legs and must lay on his belly to get to his destination and that all will quiver at the sight of a serpent. In the Mayan story â€Å"The Popol Vuh† they created this to also tell how they believe the world came to be. There was the Heart-of-Sky only no world or anything. He realizes how the sky is quiet and how he wants someone to worship him and how he wants the sun to rise and set at his whim. He calls out for the earth to come, and the earth appears. He does the same with geographical features, and they appear as well. Next he wants animals to live in the forest and out comes snakes, jaguars, birds, etc. So far Heart-of-Sky is pleased. After he created animals and tells what to do and he realizes they don’t speak like humans can so they can properly worship him. His first attempt on a human is to make them out of mud and the earth, but he was not pleased because it came out messy. So after that failed, he calls on spirits to see if he can have humans be made from wood. So after humans have been made from wood. They lay motionless but it wasn’t what Heart-of-Sky was hoping for. He decided to ruin the wooden people, and had hurricane wipe them all out by created a flood. The wooden people were displeased by Hurricane’s actions. They were angry and decided to take over the forest and from all the destruction they turned into monkeys and they believe they are an experiment of humans. That is why it is believed that humans look like monkeys. With both stories giving a reader an amazing imagination, they both compare as to being a mythical story to tell how the world and humans actually came to be. Many people, depending on religion and faith may say one is more truthful than the other. More than likely, many would agree that the Mayan tale was not a logical story, unlike the first chapter of Genesis. Some may also agree that neither story really depicts how the world actually came to be as well. In Genesis, the story can be classified as a myth because when God tells them not to eat from the tree; he tells them if they do they will die. After eating from the fruit all, the only saw they were naked and God was upset and punished them. If this God said this but does not kill them, can we say God turned the humans mortal so they could die? Therefore, all humans were potentially immortal before the man and woman bit the fruit. With the Popol Vuh, it can be considered a myth because of how Heart-of-Sky was creating the humans. And for the wooden humans to turn on him and change into monkeys would be absurd to someone fonder of Genesis.
